A playlist to guide you through those pesky first day blues. Nothing perks us up like the perfect song for the moment !
It’s your first day at the gym (or your first time making a chapati). And there’s no better way than a song to tell you that everything is going to be A-OK. Here’s a playlist for those half-starts and sputters and the thousands of good intentions that pave the way to every new beginning.
1. Nina Simone- Feeling Good
Birds flying high
you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know
how I feel Breeze driftin’ on by
you know how I feel It’s a new dawn It’s a new day
It’s a new life For me
And I’m feeeeeeeeeeling good.
No amount of terrible American Idol impersonators or hackneyed rom com montages, can diminish the effect of Nina Simone’s voice as she takes control of the room and tells you exactly how good a new start can be. Blare this one on your I Pod on the first day of a beach vacation, or the moment you start afresh in a new job.
2. Pareshan- Shalmali Kholgade (Ishaqzaade)
It’s been ages since the Red Bag revelled in the flush of a new relationship. But there really is nothing quite like it, is there? Your inner Bollywood drama queen just begs to dance atop beds, swirl in sequins and gaze moony eyed at the image of your ardour. But your practical feminist self contends with putting this song in the background as you create a detailed pros and cons list. Not all of those relationships end well, but hey, we will always have that imagined song sequence in the rain, won’t we?
3. Starting Here, Starting Now- Barbra Streisand
And hey, while we are at it and talking about a new start, let the grand old dame of music, and her steadfast belief that the best of life starts NOW glide you through some of the uncertainty that this new relationship brings. It can’t possibly end badly when it begins so well, can it?
4. Nayi Nayi Batein- Sunidhi Chauhan
If you still have doubts, then perhaps all of Rekha poured into a form fitting red dress (and ooh that awesome red lip), can convince you that it’s not worth your time dwelling in the past. Life is complicated enough without you making it even more so on yourself with those self doubts and pesky memories from history. Life is a mystery ( a paheli), so just dance confidently like no one’s watching, and everything will be fine.
5. Don’t Look Back in Anger- Oasis
It’s a good thing that Noel Gallagher’s songs make so little sense. You can paint between the lines and choose to read what you want into them. This song for instance- is it about Sally’s regrets, or is Sally waiting for you to get over your regrets? Does it really matter? All we care about is the future, and if the past gets in the way, well, Step outside, ‘
’cause summertime’s in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face cause you ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out
6. Starting a New Life- Van Morrison
We can’t think of a better song to pour a cup of coffee with on the first day of any exciting new life stage. The worst is over (the worst is yet to come). The best is yet to come (the best is over). But we are starting a new life now and you can’t kill our dreams- for now.
