With all the brouhaha over whether Sachin Tendulkar deserves a Bharat Ratna or not, and -if he does- should he get one before Dhyanchand or not, we can’t help think about previous winners. The official criteria for awarding the Bharat Ratna stipulates it is to be conferred “for the highest degrees of national service. This service includes artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as “recognition of public service of the highest order”. Sportspersons were added as an additional category in 2011.
